I liked this post. I would add that the patron saint of rock cowbell is Jimmy Miller, producer for the Rolling Stones from '68-73. He got the cowbell rocking at another band, The Spencer Davis Group (their "Gimme Some Lovin" tune features it prominently). He also played cowbell personally on "Honky Tonk Women". Miller was a drummer himself.
